Movie Review: FatsoStar Cast: Ranvir Shorey, Gul Panag, Purab Kohli, Neil Bhoopalam and Gunjan Bakshi.
Director: Rajat Kapoor.
Producer: Pritish Nandy and Rangita Pritish Nandy.
Music Directer: Sagar Desai
Genre: Comedy, Romance.
The beautiful love story of Naveen (Purab Kohli) and Nandini (Gul Panag) hits rock bottom, when Naveen meets with an accident and dies on the spot. But, thankfully, his soul gets the golden opportunity to comeback, as the modern day Yamraj picks him up instead of his fatso friend Sudeep (Ranvir Shorey), who actually had to bid good bye to life. As Naveenís body is burnt to ashes, the only way he can return to his sweetheart is by getting into Sudeepís body, who ought to die. Will Nandini recognise Naveen, who's entered Sudeep's body is the rest of the story!
First of all, if you think that Bollywood films don't justify their titles, then you wouldnít be wrong here, as Fatso definitely has nothing to do with Sudeepsís (Ranvir Shorey) plumpness. And, so is the case with Naveenís love for Nandini as alas, here too, the screenplay writer complicates it further with the leading lady Nandini falling for Sudeep. So, the question that really stands out here is- why does Naveen comeback if Nandini eventually had to get impressed by Sudeepís personality? The overtly dragged screenplay further does the needful to bore one to death.
Ranvir Shorey compels one to leave the bitter memories of Life Ki Toh Lag Gayi released last week and commands praise. He is simply fabulous. Gul Panag looks shallow at some points, but overall she impresses with her performance. Purab Kohli is cute in his small but pivotal role, which eventually loses essence as the plot thickens. Neil Bhoopalam and Gunjan Bakshi play their parts well.
Direction is the only saving grace for the film, as Rajat Kapoor intelligently tackles the bizarre plot. Itís a treat to watch Ranvir Shorey explaining Gunjan Bakshi the fact that grass is always greener on the other side, when she is on the verge of committing suicide. Also, how he shares his happiness when he gets back Gul in his life. In short, the direction is the lifeline of the film which somehow gets one hooked.
Music/ Dialogues/ Cinematography/Editing:
Music doesnít register at all. Dialogues lose essence due to the confusing screenplay. Cinematography is strictly okay. Lack of proficient editing works against the film.
Ups and downs:
Fatso rides on the shoulders of Rajat Kapoorís direction and Ranvir Shoreyís performance. A confusing screenplay, poor writing and music and impactless dialogues leave Fatso in a very uncomfortable position.
Overall, Fatso falls flat in its narrative, which makes it a dull affair. It's strictly a one time watch.

Are you looking forward to 'Fatso'?Director Rajat Kapoor is returning to the silver screen with his new film 'Fatso'. The film stars Ranvir Shorey, Gul Panag, and Purab Kohli in the lead roles. The film's basic storyline revolves around Nandini (Gul Panag) and Navin (Purab Kohli), who are in love and are all set to get married.
Navin goes out with his friend Sudeep (Ranvir Shorey) on a trip before his marriage where he dies in an accident. The angels take Navin's soul to heaven where he discovers that he has become the victim of a clerical error. The angels were supposed to pick up the soul of the hugely overweight Sudeep, but they made a mistake and brought Navin's soul. Now, the god of death wants to salvage his mistake, and thus he decides to return Navin's soul to the earth. However, the body of Navin is already dead, so his soul has to live in Sudeep's body.
This generates a very interesting situation where Sudeep, who is actually Navin's new disguise, has to woo Nandini all over again.
Produced by Pritish Nandy Communications, the shooting of 'Fatso' was finished two years ago but the makers were waiting for the right time to go public with their film.
If reports are to be believed then Ranvir Shorey had to gain 18 kg to meet his character's demand. VJ turned actor Shorey has been trying his hands in commercial as well as off-beat films but the success has remained elusive to him so far. Though he has films such as 'Mithya' and 'Ugly Aur Pagli' to his credit but he is still deprived of commercial success.
Rajat Kapoor is directing a film after a gap of four years, so he would love to see the film making money at the box office.
The film is publicized well and it has recognisable faces, so the makers would be hoping for a good finish. Recent trends in Bollywood say that a small budget film with good content can make it big at the ticket window despite challenges from big budget films, so, the team of 'Fatso' can hope for success in spite of releasing alongside 'Jannat 2' and 'Hugo'.
